A story about Bruce Sterling

In his latest Viridian Design note, Bruce Sterling declares we are winning. What does winning mean? Global climate change denialists are now viewed as reactionary, evil, or ignorant (or some combination of the three). In the future, green design will no longer be avant garde—it will be ubiquitous.

From the design note, here’s Sterling on his own track record as a futurist: “I’m good at thinking ahead: the track record shows that my speculations, even the daffiest and most sarcastic ones, do tend to be crowned with some success. Still, I tend to oversell my own foresight: Viridian shows that events and developments that I imagine are twenty years out, are only about eight or nine. As a futurist, I’m clearly not trying hard enough. Next time, I’ll try to take a bigger bite.”

Why I admire Bruce Sterling

He’s a visionary with a unique way of merging the literary, technological, and political into unexpected insights.

Why I admire Yukihiro Matsumoto

He created Ruby, which is a great programming language.

Why I want to meet Barack Obama

I think he has a very good chance to become our next president. He has it, whatever it is. That thing Clinton, Reagan, and Kennedy all had. I guess it’s a special kind of political charisma.

Actually, Reagan’s special actorly charisma did nothing for me—but a lot of people thought he was a great communicator. As for Kennedy, well, he died seven years before I was born so I can only surmise from old footage and stories that he had it.

Anyway, Barak Obama looks presidential to me. Also, like Clinton, he sounds smart.

Why I want to meet RetrogradeSonnet

She’s enthusiastic about St. John’s College and wants to encourage others with a love of learning.

Why I want to meet Amy

Amy seems very smart and thoughtful. She writes insightful comments on 43things and 43people. She’s going to graduate school soon (that’s something I dream of doing someday). She’s a Johnny alum too—perhaps we’ll encounter one another at Homecoming one of these years.

The real reason I want to meet Nhoj

How glorious to meet a fellow alum here, especially one who thinks about a lot of the same things I do!

Why I want to meet Cory Doctorow

Alright, I have to admit I’m a little uneasy about the whole wanting to meet a celebrity thing. However, I do really like Cory Doctorow’s stories and novels—I listen to his excellent podcast. Also, he sounds like a genuinely nice guy. Plus, of all the famous people I can think of, he seems like one whom I might encounter in a non-awkward situation, say, in some EFF or geek-related context.

Plus, I know from looking at Flickr photos (I happened to be looking through those with the “Zeitgeist” tag) that he was hanging out at Zeitgeist once. Although I don’t go there very often (good daddies don’t spend a lot of time in bars), I do occasionally. Who knows, we might get a sitter, go to Zeitgeist, and Cory Doctorow would be there—hey, it could happen.

Why I want to meet Taylor

He writes well and has ethical goals. Also, he lives in Wisconsin. I go there sometimes.

A story about Nhoj

I had a dream about Nhoj last night.
I was walking somewhere and saw a kiosk billboard for 43 People. And Nhoj’s picture was on it! The tagline was something about “Nhoj works (someplace) and lives on 43 People”.

It’s my first dream about 43 People or 43 Things. Does this mean I’m getting too obsessed with this site?
